The new ½ level entry lobby connects the lower level social hall with the upper level Narthex and Sanctuary. The tight urban site required a variance to allow the owner to build right up to the property line.
A seamless transition was paramount for the congregation, so careful attention was required to match the existing materials and details. The roof on the existing Narthex and Sanctuary was replaced 2 years prior to this addition; therefore, matching the shingles exactly was simplified. The built-in gutters, which sit on a cut stone band with brick corbelling below, were also duplicated. Although the original brick was handmade on-site, we were able to match the new brick very closely. Cut stone window heads and sill, as well as stone base coursing were also part of the project and required the same level of detail in matching.
