Goodale & Schiller Parks – Masonry Restoration

Schiller Park and Goodale Park are the two oldest parks in Columbus and are located at the heart of each of their historic neighborhoods. Schiller Park, located in German Village, is approximately twenty three acres and offers a range of recreational activities including walking trails, fishing, basketball and floral displays. Schiller Park is also home to the Actor’s Summer Theater which runs from late May to early September.

Goodale Park, the larger and older of the two parks, is located in Victorian Village just north of the Arena District. The park is best known for its large collection of trees, the iconic gazebo and the scenic pond. Community features include ball fields, basketball and tennis courts, and the shelter house that was designed to reflect the architecture of the surrounding neighborhood.

Both of the parks monumental entrance gates make use of materials and styles that blend them into the fabric of the surrounding neighborhood.

Mull & Weithman Architects were hired in 2016 by Columbus Recreation & Parks to oversee the historic preservation / renovation of all the monumental gates at Schiller Park and the East Entry Gate at Goodale Park.

The scope of work including careful documentation of the existing conditions, developing a demolition plan to protect existing stone to remain and researching sources of new materials to match the existing as well as preserve existing work. Mull & Weithman worked closely with the Friends of Goodale and Schiller organizations as well as the Historic Preservation districts responsible for each park.
